Marriage Hall
A 19th-Century Rajbari, Still Hosting Weddings in Kolkata
Subhead: Baro Kuthi Rajbari, a heritage marriage hall in Kolkata’s Belgachia, run by the same family that built it.
In [1857], my great-great-grandfather laid the first stones of Baro Kuthi at what was then the northern edge of Calcutta. The road outside was a cart track. The chandelier in the main hall came by ship from Belgium. Five generations later, the chandelier is still there, the hall is still ours, and a few times a month we hand the keys to a family getting married.
If you’ve been looking through marriage halls in Kolkata and everything is starting to look like the same hotel ballroom with different upholstery, this is not that.
AC Marriage Hall in Kolkata for Your Dream Wedding
The word Rajbari literally means “royal house.” In 19th-century Bengal, the [family name] zamindars built mansions across north Kolkata to host weddings, jatras, and Durga Pujas. Most of those houses are gone now – sold to developers, broken into flats. Baro Kuthi is one of the few still doing what it was built for.
What that means in practice when you book a wedding here:
- The thakur dalan (the traditional inner courtyard altar) becomes your mandap.
- Original woodwork, mosaic flooring, and chandeliers stay exactly as they are. We do not drape over the heritage.
- The [120]-year-old bel tree in the inner courtyard ends up in your photos whether you plan for it or not.
- The decorators we work with know how to layer modern florals and lighting over a heritage property without fighting it.
This isn’t a venue dressed up to look like a Rajbari. It is one, and we are careful about it.
AC Marriage Hall in Kolkata - Halls, Lawns and Capacity
Three main spaces. Use them singly or together depending on the size and shape of your wedding.
The Main Hall (Boithok Khana): [3,800 sq ft], fully air-conditioned with [6-ton split AC systems], chandelier-lit, seats [250] for a sit-down reception or [400] standing/cocktail. The 1860s mosaic flooring is still in place underfoot.
The Thakur Dalan (Courtyard Mandap): Open-sky during the day, covered with traditional shamiana for evening events or rain. Holds the wedding mandap plus [150] guests for the ceremony. The bel tree at its centre cannot be rebuilt anywhere.
The Garden Lawn: [10,000 sq ft] of open lawn for gaye holud, sangeet, mehendi, or a daytime reception. Capacity [300 – 500] depending on layout. Tents, stage and lighting handled by our partner team.
For a full Bengali wedding spread across two or three days – aiburo bhaat, gaye holud, biye, bou bhaat, the whole property is yours. For a single-day reception, take just the Main Hall.

Why Couples Call Baro Kuthi the Best Marriage Hall in Kolkata?
We’re cautious about claiming we’re the best marriage hall in Kolkata, that’s for the families who’ve actually held weddings here to decide. But here’s what they tell us, in the thank-you notes that arrive after:
- The photos come out unlike anywhere else. Wedding photographers ask to shoot here on their off days. Every corner of the property is a backdrop.
- You’re working with the family. We live on the property. You’re not negotiating with a duty manager who’ll be reassigned by the time your wedding comes around.
- One wedding a day, sometimes one a weekend. No back-to-back bookings, no kitchen running two parties at once. The space, the staff and our attention are yours.
- It scales down honestly. A lot of grand Kolkata marriage hall venues feel empty at 100 guests. The Thakur Dalan was built to feel intimate; the lawn opens up when you need it to.
